Author, Audrey Valeriani..."Self Esteem Dolls are a great way for women to remember to take care of 'the little girl in your pocket' as I advise in my book Boot Camp for the Broken-Hearted: How to Survive (and Be Happy) in the Jungle of Love..."
(excerpt from Boot Camp for the Broken-Hearted: How to Survive (and Be Happy) in the Jungle of Love) "Picture in your mind that there is a little girl who lives in your shirt pocket. Take her out and look at her standing in the palm of your hand. Notice how sad she looks. She’s been mistreated most of her life. She’s been belittled, hurt, abused; she’s gotten dirty and wet, felt cold, hungry and lonely. Not only have other people made her feel this way, but so have you – by ignoring her needs and prolonging her pain. Can you picture her little face looking up at you? Why were you as mean to her as everyone else had been? She looked to you for love and kindness and you provided none, instead blaming her for causing what was not her fault. Did you perhaps feel that there must have been a reason all these bad things happened and that she must have deserved such misfortune? Have you become so hardened and cynical by the let-downs of life that there’s no compassion left inside your heart for someone else? For yourself? That’s right. That little girl is you. Now try and remember all of the things that have happened in your life that hurt you. It’s not fair, is it? All you’ve ever wanted was for the pain to stop, for that hole in your belly to heal. You’ve been looking for something or someone to make you feel better, to change your life. Well, that someone has been with you the whole time, just look in the mirror. It’s not too late. Now take that little girl and clean her up. Give her some healthy food and nice clothes. Make her look pretty. Tell her that she’s wonderful and that you love her. Tell her that she can do anything and that you will help her to have a wonderful life from this point on. Then put her back in your pocket, next to your heart, and never forget she is there...." *Groovy Girl Doll made by Manhattan Toy Company AS FEATURED IN THE NEWS!
POST-STANDARD, SYRACUSE, N.Y.New doll aimed at reinforcing girls' self-worthPosted by Gina Chen July 08, 2008 11:35AMA fellow mom passed along this tip. There's a new doll out that aims to help "celebrate high self-esteem," accordinig to a news release for the doll, which is appropriated dubbed "Self Esteem Doll." It's the brainchild of Audrey Valeriani, board chair of the Self Esteem Boston Institute and author of "Boot Camp for the Broken-Hearted." The dolls come in a variety of skin, hair and eye colors, so that every girl, regardless of ethnicity, can have a doll that looks a little like her. They retail for $15.99. Girls can customize the dolls with sashes of affirming sayings such as: 1. You rock [insert name]! I don't generally endorse products on this blog, and I'm not necessarily endorsing this one. But I'm very interested in the idea of young girls -- and boys -- accepting themselves how they are and not trying to fit the movie star ideal of beauty. I do like the idea that the dolls reflect a variety of races because as a mom of biracial children, I have found it tough -- if not impossible -- to find Asian dolls in Central New York stores. It's particularly tough on young girls today to accept their bodies when the ideal of beauty they are presented with is impossible for so many of them to achieve. I'm all for being healthy and fit, but even with exercise and a healthy diet, most girls won't come close to looking like the models they see in the media or fitting in the itty-bitty clothes they see in the most popular stores. Plus there's that awkward stage during puberty when a little girl's body is turning into a woman's, and the result is often hardly the svelte, size 0 girls that age may wish they had. So anything that helps girls accept themselves is good in my book!

"If you’re watching Lifetime melodramas for the fifth day in a row, dust yourself off and head over to this book signing with author and relationship guru Audrey Valeriani to snag her latest for less than full price and snack on some hors d’ouevres, socialize with someone other than your married sister and, er, lament with others over love lost." ~ “The author writes in a down to earth, witty, no-nonsense way with humor, lots of how-to lists, and even revealing exercises. By reading this book, you gain deeper understanding coupled with knowledge and actual effective techniques and exercises to improve your communication skills, which are crucial for making any relationship work… with keener insights about how to create and sustain mutually fulfilling intimacy… If you are just out of a relationship, it is for you.
